Ms. Maters Kindergarten Classroom

WELCOMES YOU!

Teaching Philosophy:  I believe as an educator I am to provide a loving, nurturing, risk-free environment in which all of my students can and love to learn.  This environment will provide growth and development of the whole child physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually.  This can be achieved by sharing my enthusiasm and love of learning and setting high expectations for all students.  Once this has been established students will strive to reach their potential and continue to be life long learners.

We keep going all year long!

Read, Read, Read!!!

In Ms. Mater’s class we love to READ!  Literacy is the cornerstone of our classroom.  Everyday we have a 45 minute block of time were we focus on letters, letter sounds, and reading.  During this time students learn the basic sounds, learn to blend some words, learn sight words, and learn to read simple sentences.  This is preparing them to enter first grade and become the future readers of our world!  We also promote reading out of the classroom.  Students have daily homework that involves reading for 20 minutes everyday.  This is a great way for parents to get involved in their children’s education.  Just think, by reading with your child for as little as 20 minute everyday, you are improving not only their reading skills, but also their language skills, math skills, and writing skills!  So get reading!!!

Labs!

In kindergarten, we like to think of ourselves as scientist exploring our surroundings.  We do this everyday through labs (centers).  During labs the students are able to complete math, science, art, literacy, reading, building and house keeping activities.  Students do hands-on activities that allow them to use their imagination and creativity.  Lab time is many of the student’s favorite part of the day.  Many of the labs promote a challenge to my youngsters and promote higher thinking skills.  The labs also enforce the kindergarten standards.  Who knew, something that can be challenging and cover all standards could also be such fun for students!
