Counselors Corner
As the
guidance counselor I have the privilege of going into each classroom
and teaching every two weeks. In September, our school-wide
character word has been “Respect” and so my lessons have focused on
social skills and teaching everyone basic ways to get along with
both adults and other students. The skills we have focused on are:
Following instructions: how to be a cheerful helper
Getting
the teacher’s attention appropriately
Making
an apology
Disagreeing appropriately
Accepting “No” for an answer
Introducing yourself and others
Giving
and accepting compliments
Making a
request appropriately
Some of
these may sound very basic but many children are not able to use
words and manners that will help them be successful both at school
and later on in life as an adult. Role-playing these skills in a
neutral classroom setting with their peers will hopefully help them
act and speak appropriately when they may be feeling tired, upset,
angry, or sad. Perhaps you have noticed some positive changes in
these areas at home, too!
