Fifth Grade Palm Project

 Getting Started

Proved to be a challenge and a learning experience for all involved.  A school with a new beginning, a new focus, and theme of literacy. Fifth grade teachers now had new technology to use; palms for every student , laptops, projectors, and smart boards. So how do we integrate all this technology into literacy.

 Palms in action

Integrating the palm into the curriculum was a challenge for both the teachers and the students, but we persevered and wouldn't want to turn back the hands of time. Using the palms in the classroom really keeps the students engaged and they are excited about learning!

    Palms verses Paper and Pencil

Student responses:

·          It helps me write faster.

·          It is easier to type and edit rather than hand writing stories, “my hand doesn’t hurt anymore”.

·          It makes me want to learn my multiplication, and division facts, because it is more fun.

·          We  have races to see who can complete the most problems in 3 minutes.

·          I like playing the spelling game, like What Word, Spell Buddy, and Hang Man to practice spelling words.

·          It has made me a better speller.

·          I am having to learn how long my story is when I write on the palm. It looks so long on the palm pilot, but when I print it is short.

·          I learn while I play.

·          It is fun to take them home to show my parents what I am learning while I am playing a game.

·          I can read a book on my palm. I can beam my ideas to other kids.
